PHYTOSPHINGOSINE
Is PHYTOSPHINGOSINE safe for seborrheic dermatitis?
Phytosphingosine is not automatically unsafe for seborrheic dermatitis, but its Malassezia evidence is mixed. It is a skin-identical lipid component used in barrier-focused and ceramide formulas. In one laboratory study, lower test concentrations stimulated Malassezia furfur growth, while inhibition appeared only at much higher concentrations. That concentration-dependent result is worth knowing, but it does not predict how a finished cosmetic will behave on skin.
The study used one yeast species in a controlled laboratory system, not people with seb derm, and it does not establish phytosphingosine as either a trigger or a treatment. Concentration and the rest of the formula matter. During an active flare, choose a simple product and introduce it cautiously; stop if repeated use brings more itching, redness or stinging.

What is PHYTOSPHINGOSINE used for in skincare?
Phytosphingosine is included as a conditioning ingredient in skin and hair products. It may contribute to the feel and barrier-oriented positioning of a formula, but the ingredient record used here does not support a direct treatment claim. The finished product remains the useful unit to assess.
