PHENETHYL ALCOHOL
Is PHENETHYL ALCOHOL safe for seborrheic dermatitis?
Phenethyl Alcohol is context-dependent for seborrheic dermatitis. It is mainly used for a rose-like scent and sometimes to support preservation or dissolve other ingredients; it does not treat seb derm or directly feed Malassezia as a fatty lipid would.
A fragrance safety assessment supports its described uses, but that is not a promise that fragranced skincare will feel comfortable on inflamed skin. There is no direct human seb derm study for the ingredient. If a leave-on product containing Phenethyl Alcohol repeatedly burns, reddens or intensifies itching, a simpler fragrance-free option is the more practical choice during a flare.

What is PHENETHYL ALCOHOL used for in skincare?
Phenethyl Alcohol is an aromatic alcohol with a soft floral, rose-like odour. In skincare it may perfume the product, act as a solvent and help a broader preservative system work effectively. It is often combined with fragrance blends, botanical extracts, glycols and other preservatives rather than used as a headline active.
