PEG-40 HYDROGENATED CASTOR OIL
Is PEG-40 HYDROGENATED CASTOR OIL safe for seborrheic dermatitis?
PEG-40 Hydrogenated Castor Oil is worth treating with caution during an active seb derm flare or in a strict Malassezia-conscious routine. It is an ethoxylated castor-oil ingredient used to mix oils and fragrance into water-based formulas. In an older laboratory study, Malassezia furfur could use a related PEG-35 castor-oil material. That creates a theoretical flag, not proof that PEG-40 Hydrogenated Castor Oil causes a flare in every product.
The study did not test this exact hydrogenated PEG-40 ingredient, a cosmetic concentration or people with seborrheic dermatitis, and the result differed between Malassezia species. A small amount in a rinse-off cleanser is also a different exposure from a leave-on product. If you want the lowest-theory-risk routine during a flare, choose a formula without it; otherwise stop if repeated use increases itching, redness or stinging.

What is PEG-40 HYDROGENATED CASTOR OIL used for in skincare?
PEG-40 Hydrogenated Castor Oil works as an emulsifying and cleansing surfactant. It helps oily ingredients, including fragrance materials, disperse through a water-based product and remain evenly mixed. Its job is product stability and delivery rather than direct skin treatment.
