COAL TAR
Is COAL TAR safe for seborrheic dermatitis?
Coal Tar can help some people manage dandruff or seborrheic-dermatitis scaling, but it is not a neutral everyday cosmetic ingredient. It is used as an active in regulated medicated products, and the product label matters because concentration, contact time, sunlight precautions and personal sensitivity affect safe use.
A controlled shampoo study found that a 0.5% coal-tar shampoo improved dandruff, although a multi-active non-tar comparator performed better on some measures and reduced Malassezia counts more. This does not make Coal Tar universally effective or suitable. Follow the actual product directions, avoid prolonged unsupervised use, and stop if irritation becomes significant.

What is COAL TAR used for in skincare?
Coal Tar is a complex mixture used as an active ingredient in some medicated shampoos and skin products for dandruff, seborrheic dermatitis and psoriasis. It can slow excessive scaling and reduce related symptoms, but it may also have a strong smell, affect hair colour and require sunlight precautions. It should be treated as a labelled treatment product, not a general texture ingredient.
