CETYL ALCOHOL
Is CETYL ALCOHOL safe for seborrheic dermatitis?
Cetyl Alcohol is not the same as drying alcohol denat., but it is still worth treating cautiously during an active seb derm flare. It is a C16 primary fatty alcohol. Laboratory research found that primary fatty alcohols in this chain-length range could support Malassezia growth, although this exact ingredient was not isolated in a human seb derm study. That makes it a theoretical screening concern, not a proven trigger.
Cetyl Alcohol can still make a formula feel smooth, rich and less drying, so avoiding it is a precaution rather than a medical rule. Species, concentration and the complete formula can change the result. During a flare, a formula without long-chain primary fatty alcohols is the simpler option; otherwise stop if it repeatedly increases itching, redness or stinging.

What is CETYL ALCOHOL used for in skincare?
Cetyl Alcohol is a fatty alcohol that gives creams body, improves slip and helps skin feel softer. It can also support an emulsion so the product remains stable. Its waxy texture-building role is quite different from ethanol or denatured alcohol used for quick evaporation.
